New life is in your midst, and it is truly a gift from God. How blest are you and your family to be able to experience the love of God in such a special way. We hope that through the Sacrament of Baptism you and your loved ones will grow in the Faith of the Church and be open to receive all the graces that are so freely given by the Holy Spirit at this time.
We encourage parents to baptize their child within the first few weeks after they are born. We do, however, ask parents to attend a baptism preparation class befrore presenting their child for this sacrament. We want to ensure parents understand the sacrament and their roles in raising the child in their Catholic faith.
A child who has not yet celebrated their 7th birthday is considered an "infant" in regards to baptism within the Catholic Church. As long as your child is less than seven years of age, the process is the same. Depending on the understanding and maturity of your child, this might be a wonderful opportunity for theim to share in the preparation for the sacrament.
At least one of the parents should be a practicing Catholic willing to commit to the task of rearing their child in the faith of the Church. Parents should accept that they are the first and foremost teachers of the faith.
A "Practicing Catholic" means that not only do you hold true all that the Catholic Church teaches and proclaims, but that you are active in worship and liturgical celebrations of the Church. Oftentimes, the Baptism of the child can be the tipping point to move a parent to a greater commitment to the practice of faith.
If one of the parents is a practicing Catholic, as long as the other parent is in agreement, the child can be Baptized. There must also be a well-founded expectation that the child will be brought up in the Catholic tradition.
The selection of Godparents for the Sacrament of Baptism should be done with care and consideration of the faith life of each person. The church's law for this sacrament requires that the Godparent be:
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Godparents can be neither a parent or stepparent of the child.
A fully initiated Catholic, which means he or she has received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
A Catholic in good standing, which means must be registered in a parish, attending Holy Mass every week, and living according to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
If married, they must be married in the Catholic Church.
Church law requires at least one godparent. If two, they must be male and female.
Baptism preparation is held on the first Tuesday of the month. The class is held in the library at St. Brigid Parish Center. If there is a conflict this can be done at another time.
Both parents must attend a Baptismal preparation class if this is their first child being baptized. If both parents have attended Baptismal preparation class at some earlier time, we would welcome their participation but we do not require that they attend. Godparents are also welcome to attend.
We ask that all parents register prior to attending class by calling the office at (781)862-0335.
